How to Create a Mini Wellness Retreat at Home

Mental health and wellbeing took a hit last year, so you may be craving some time to rest and recharge in 2021. Wellness retreats are becoming increasingly popular as we learn more about the pitfalls of stress, tension, and anxiety. Since traveling isn’t happening currently, a far-flung oasis may be hard to come by. Fortunately, there are ample ways to take care of your mind and body from the comfort and safety of your own home. Here are some ideas for creating an at-home wellness retreat.

Be Intentional with Your Time

Think about how much time you would dedicate to yourself if you were traveling to a wellness retreat. Consider blocking off a similar amount of time for your at-home practice in self-care so you can be more intentional about pampering yourself. Consider planning your activities ahead of time to have a general idea of how long each will take. Make a list of must-have events, items, or activities and create a secondary category you can pull from should you tick off the top priorities.

Pack a Bag

Or, at the very least, lay out the clothes, PJs, or loungewear you’d be most comfortable in. Set out slippers, wash the sheets, and light a candle. Prepare your bedroom as if it were a relaxing hotel room to get into a contemplative, restful mindset. Even just a small change of scenery can work wonders in transporting us away from daily chores and injecting us into a new, peaceful reality free from worry.

Meal Prep Clean Recipes

While you’re busy putting all the good vibes into your head and heart, it’s crucial to feed your physical body proper nutrients full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Check out the menu from a yoga seminar or other wellness-focused getaway. Pick some items and stock up on the ingredients. Consider pre-making smoothie packets full of healthy greens, fresh, tropical fruit, and turmeric powder. Each morning, you can have a nutritious breakfast before tackling that morning meditation or sunrise stretch.

Unplug

It may be tempting to get a little extra work done, scroll through Instagram, or finish up that show you’ve been streaming, but unplugging can give your brain a much-needed break. Tell the significant people in your life that you’re taking a little technology break for a few days. If you can, turn off your phone completely and take a total screen break.

Book a Spa Treatment

While the majority of this staycation will be in your home, splurge on a spa treatment at a local spot. Opt for a massage, facial, or body wrap to look and feel renewed by the end of your retreat.

Get Moving

A wellness retreat wouldn’t be complete without a little exercise. Sign up for a free class at a new exercise studio or go outdoors for a hike. Reconnecting with nature is a great way to foster both mental and physical health. Or, if you’re allowing a little screen time, download a yoga or Pilates class to do in the living room. Realigning with your breath and gaining increased body awareness can remain well after your retreat is long over.

When planning an at-home wellness retreat, it’s important to keep in mind what is actually important and meaningful to your mental health. If you love journaling, include time to do that. If the thought of meditating for 30 minutes each morning concerns you, don’t do it. Fill your day with activities that pamper and sooth your mind and body.
