How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

If you spend way too much time deciding what to wear each morning, comparing and contrasting for hours before a night out on the town, or sorting through clothes you haven’t worn since TikTok became a thing, a capsule wardrobe is an excellent way to get your closet under control.

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing that mixes and matches to create all sorts of outfits for a variety of occasions. Because it’s built around a minimalist color palette that coordinates effectively, it often involves ridding your wardrobe of surplus clothing and loud outfits.

A capsule wardrobe can help you:

  • Make a quicker decision on what to wear
  • Get ready faster
  • Reduce stress
  • Save time and money
  • Use your closet more efficiently
  • Utilize your clothes in new and different ways

Building a capsule wardrobe is simple. Start with the following steps:

Decluttering isn’t just good for your closet space, it’s good for your mental health, as well. It’s also a very easy process that involves simply going through your closet and getting rid of items you don’t wear, those that don’t fit, those that don’t flatter you, and those that are out of season. The purging pile can be given to friends and family, sold at consignment stores, or donated. Out-of-season clothes should be stored somewhere other than your closet, such as your basement or attic.

Determine Your Style

While anything minimalist seems to conjure up colors of black, white, and gray, you don’t have to remove all other colors from your wardrobe. If you look great in red, for instance, make sure a rosy hue is a prominent feature of your style and pick other colors that go with it (like the aforementioned black, white, and gray). A good rule of thumb is to pick a few base colors and a few accent colors. If you aren’t sure what these colors should be, consider what colors you wear the most…that’s your answer.

Replace and Supplement

Now that you know your style, it’s time to tweak your closet so that it’s set to rock and roll and get you ready for work in five minutes flat. Go through your closet and look for items that are worn, stretched out, ripped, or torn, and replace them with identical garb if possible (after all, if something is worn and torn, you wore it a lot). You should also supplement your wardrobe with things like a tank top or tee in your go-to accent color. However, don’t go too far in adding new items; embracing the idea that less is more is the entire point of this lifestyle change.

A capsule wardrobe is an easy way to simplify your life, taking a little chaos out of your closet. Cut yourself some slack (and some slacks) by getting rid of what you don’t need and emphasizing what you want.
