Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes

It’s important to treat your furry friends to a sustainable diet full of vitamins and nutrients so they may have a long, vibrant life. Instead of spending exorbitant amounts of money on high-end, bagged dog food, you can cut out the middleman and make your own. Here are some healthy and simple dog food recipes you can prepare in bulk to give your furry friend something delicious and nutritious each mealtime.

The Go-To

This homemade dog food recipe is aptly named because it’s the simplest recipe that mimics bagged food, without all the preservatives and fillers. A majority of pre-made dog meal is made of rice or another simple starch, meat, and veggies. The Go-To contains all of the same things and can easily be manipulated to include or exclude certain ingredients your dog likes or dislikes.

Combine equal parts cooked ground turkey with equal parts cooked brown rice. Next, throw chopped or shredded carrots, sliced zucchini, and frozen peas into a saucepan and cook with olive oil until tender. Once cooled, mix all ingredients together and voila! Homemade dog food that will keep Fido fueled for a week.

Sweet & Simple

When our pups’ tummies get upset, it’s always advisable to feed them plain cooked chicken and white rice. If this is the go-to for sensitive stomachs, why not make it a meal? Instead of just chicken and rice, this recipe incorporates both of these ingredients, sweet potatoes, and mixed veggies for a balanced and gentle dog food.

Combine equal parts cooked chicken and rice (shred the chicken for small or toy dog breeds) with a bag of frozen veggies and cooked, cubed sweet potatoes. For littler dogs or those who are particularly picky, mash or cream the sweet potatoes and add as a dollop when serving each meal.

Day-Long Delight

For pet lovers on the go or dogs with dietary restrictions, this recipe involves a crock pot, very little time, and no grains. Place three pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breast and/or thighs in a crock pot with some olive oil and enough water to cover the chicken. Allow these to slow cook on low all day until shred-able with a fork. Add one can of kidney beans, two medium peeled apples (shredded or sliced, seeds removed), sliced carrots, and frozen green beans.

You can modify veggies and fruits as you (or your pup) see fit. Once everything is cooked down and soft, portion out into baggies or bowls and your homemade dog food is done!

With these three recipes in your homemade arsenal, your furry family member will be delighted each time breakfast or dinner rolls around. These simple recipes minimize the effort and maximize the results, saving you time and money. Plus, your pup will benefit from a healthy, happy life and a satisfied tummy.
