DIY Bug Spray: Keep the Pests Away Without the Pesticides

Whether it’s a mosquito ordering up a pint of O-positive from your forearm or a daddy long leg crawling on your living room wall, summer tends to summon creepy crawlers and frightening flyers. But you don’t need to buy pesticides to keep the pests away; there are several DIY options that will ban the bugs! Consider giving the following a try:

Lavender and Witch Hazel

This concoction mixes one part lavender (or lemon eucalyptus) with 10 parts witch hazel in a spray bottle. Shake it up to mix it together and spray accordingly. The witch hazel is the magic bullet in this recipe; bugs don’t like the medicinal smell any more than people do.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Like the solution above, this one uses witch hazel and essential oils, but includes other potent ingredients for a bigger effect. These additives include a half cup of apple cider vinegar and 40 drops of an essential oil blend (a mixture of eucalyptus, lemongrass, citronella, tea tree, and rosemary).

This bug spray will either repel insects or get them tipsy. It uses high-proof vodka, vegetable glycerine, and an essential oil melody. You can also add vanilla extract as an optional ingredient if you want to make the solution a bit sweeter smelling.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is one of the simplest solutions for keeping pests away; it’s been known to repel spiders, mosquitos, and ants. Be sure to opt for peppermint that is 100 percent pure with no additives. As a diluted mixture, it works well on your skin for those summer evenings when the mosquitoes are hungry.

Vinegar packs a one-two punch because of its acidity and its odor. It’s a great option for pests that like to invade plants. It repels some on contact (make sure to spray under the leaves to rid the foliage of any eggs) and keeps scent-driven insects away proactively.

You don’t have to choose between pesticides or making space for your summer roommates. These solutions are an easy and effective way to keep your home, skin, and plants as pest-free as possible.
