Charities to Consider for the Holidays

The holidays are the most popular time of year for charitable giving, but with so many organizations in need, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your checkbook. A good place to start is with your passions.

Whether you’re concerned about the environment, poverty, animal rights, children, health, or something else, there’s a charity sure to fit your interests. A few to consider include the following:

Denver Food Rescue

From surplus-laden produce aisles to restaurants with oversized servings, wasting food is a well-known occurrence across the US each day. Denver Food Rescue strives to put a dent in this waste. It has a special focus on fresh fruits and veggies, which distinguishes it from typical food banks, and works to save apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, spinach, and more from being thrown out at farmers markets and supermarkets.

Summit Dog Rescue

There’s no better way to honor the season of love than by helping those who dole it out unconditionally. While you can’t go wrong with donating to any dog-centric charity, Summit Dog Rescue is a way to make a difference in your own backyard. Based in Boulder, this rescue’s mission is to save dogs from no-kill shelters by using a mindful approach to place pets in ideal homes. It is completely run on donations and has been rescuing wet noses and wagging tails since 2009.

Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House is made up of over 685 programs across 60 countries and managed by more than 74,000 volunteers. The organization was founded in 1974 with the intention of providing comfort and support to families who must travel to receive medical care for their children. It has since become one of the most well-known and well-respected charities in existence.

National Alliance on Mental Health

The National Alliance on Mental Health (better known as NAMI) is dedicated to enhancing the lives of those affected by mental illness. It’s the largest grassroots mental health organization in the nation, with 600 affiliates spread across the US. Donations are particularly needed in the post-COVID era when mental health struggles have affected more people than ever before.

Pay Away the Layaway

Pay Away the Layaway’s mission is to help families in need pay off layaway balances for things like children’s clothes, games, books, school supplies, toys, and more. It partners with major retailers and stores to surprise unsuspecting families with little holiday miracles. The number of families it is able to help is contingent on how many donations the organization receives, though it has successfully grown over the past decade.

Charitable giving is something welcome all year long, but the holidays make it feel even more special. While there are all sorts of organizations worthy of your donations, the aforementioned is a good place to start. Celebrate the season by making a difference one contribution at a time.
