Best Spring Hikes Near Boulder, Colorado

From mountain roads to pebbled paths, Colorado offers plenty of places to hike the hills. And Gunbarrel is no exception; it’s easy to find a boulder to climb by heading toward Boulder.

In fact, there are several prime spots to celebrate spring by lacing up your boots and venturing into the great outdoors. Consider exploring the following:

White Rocks

East Boulder Trail at White Rocks gives you a chance to hike without the hubbub of crowds - this trailhead averages less than 30 visitors a day. If wildlife is your jam, it makes an excellent choice. It’s 2.2 miles full of birds, bats, coyotes, foxes, snakes, raptors, and more. Bring your camera to snap a picture of the snapping turtles.

Niwot Loop

The Niwot Loop is divided into sections, with the lower loop compromising 3.5 miles and going through the center of town. Its length makes it a bit timely to complete but, with virtually no elevation gain, it’s an ideal outing for anyone who likes their hikes without a side of altitude. If you’re looking to make a day of it, consider venturing onto one of the off-shooting paths and discovering where the journey takes you.

Sawhill Ponds

Sawhill Ponds offers a 1.6-mile leisurely stroll that’s fairly easy. The ponds are numerous and are the result of previous gravel pits that filled with groundwater and created thriving wetlands. They’re home to reptiles and amphibians, making them a fun option if little ones are looking to frolic among the frogs.

Twin Lakes Regional Trail

Twin Lakes Regional Trail makes a great choice if you’re looking for a quick hike. This 1.1-mile route follows a creek and offers ample shade on warm spring afternoons. It’s a segment of the expansive Longmont-Boulder trail system, allowing you to extend your outing if desired.

Teller Farm

Teller Farm is an easy-to-moderate hike of just over two miles. It goes through farmland and past Teller Lake, offering views of cattle and horses grazing, beekeeping operations, and crop agriculture. The trails are groomed and a popular spot for runners and bike riders. Dogs are allowed, but not permitted in certain areas, so walk Fido with caution.

Your hiking boots are made for walking! Whether you’re looking for a quick jaunt or a committed trek, it’s easy to find a local path almost anywhere in Boulder’s backyard.
